Thunder waive Alex Abrines

Thunder waive Alex Abrines

The Thunder reportedly waived third-year guard Alex Abrines on Saturday, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Though he ultimately returned to the court on January 29 in Orlando, then played the following game in Miami, he was again out of the Thunder lineup in each of the last three contests due to personal reasons. Though Oklahoma City offered no explanation for his release, ESPN's Royce Young reports that the decision was one mutually agreed upon by both the team and Abrines so he can focus on attending to the issue at hand absent the distractions of basketball. "He's around the team, we always talk and communicate", said Billy Donovan on February 5th.

Known for his perimeter shooting, Abrines struggled to find a rhythm from 3 this season, though he hit a career-high seven 3s against Atlanta in November. The Spanish guard will become a free agent once he clears waivers.

That was the plan all along. "If that was a normal year, on reflection, maybe we wouldn't have made so many changes". But Gatland warned: " Italy will be hurting after last weekend, but they are a different proposition in Rome".

With the move, the Thunder's roster is down to 12 guaranteed contracts and two two-way contracts (Donte Grantham, Deonte Burton). By rule, they will need to add two players within the next two weeks.

In 31 games this season, Abrines averaged 5.3 points and 1.5 rebounds over 19.0 minutes. The 25 year old played in 174 games for OKC over the past three seasons.
