Pelosi, top Democrats demand Omar apologize for anti-Semitic tweets about Israel

On Sunday, Omar responded to a tweet by journalist Glenn Greenwald that reads, "GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy threatens punishment for @IlhanMN and @RashidaTlaib over their criticisms of Israel". Taken together, she appeared to suggest that Republican outrage was rooted in money.

Omar's views on Israel were thrust into the center of controversy for the second time in recent weeks on Sunday after she posted a series of critical tweets about pro-Israel lobbying efforts. "We urge you to join us in calling on each member of our Caucus to unite against anti-Semitism and hateful tropes and stereotypes".

Omar had been criticized by Republicans and Democrats for saying on Twitter that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobbying group, was paying USA politicians to support Israel.

Although Omar is meeting with Clinton, she has not directly apologized for her comments.

Rep Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., called for her removal from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The idea that it's "Jewish money" or "the Jewish lobby" or AIPAC that's the main reason Republicans have moved in this direction is an absolutely ideal distraction from the real reasons, and one that furthers the argument that you have to choose between Netanyahu, settlements, and Greater Israel on the one hand, or anti-Semitism on the other.

Aipac's website says it offers a congressional club membership that requires "political contributions in a clearly pro-Israel context to candidates".

"Please learn how to talk about Jews in a non-anti-Semitic way".

House Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler, also of NY, said Ms Omar's choice of words was "deeply disappointing and disturbing".

But when Ryan flubbed part of the on-air chat, Gaga was quick to point out his awkward move - which left viewers at home cringing. Her charisma and loose confidence were infectious, and did a lot of the heavy lifting throughout the show's entire run time .

Rose, who is Jewish, wrote in a statement, "Congresswoman Omar's statements are deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself". Her words are deeply hurtful and offensive, particularly as they build on a previous comment she made about Jews "hypnotizing" the world in support of Israel - another old trope born of hate-filled texts like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Omar is one of the first Muslim women in history elected to Congress.

The call from Democratic leaders came after McCarthy issued a statement criticizing the majority party for inaction. She has been accused of anti-Semitism in the past. "It's all about the Benjamins baby", she wrote on Twitter over the weekend. "Is she also Islamophobic for attacking Saudi's influence on American politics in the exactly the same way?"

Update (02/11/10, 3 p.m. ET): This story was updated to include a statement from Representative Ilhan Omar.

In response to Ms Omar, Aipac tweeted: "Our bipartisan efforts are reflective of American values and interests". " - the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a powerful lobby that channels campaign donations to sympathetic legislators". Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., for their support of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement against the Israeli government.

The tweet came during Israel's Operation Pillar of Defense in the Gaza Strip that erupted when Israel killed chief Hamas' military wing Ahmed Jabari in an airstrike following escalation on the border that saw over 100 rockets launched into Israel within a 24-hour period.

Omar has found herself responding to anti-Semitism accusations before.

Republicans and Democrats alike said the tweets stoked anti-Semitic tropes about Jews and money.

The Minnesota Democrat said she had no intention offending anyone, including Jewish Americans.
