Rescue workers worked for three hours to save the baby girl, who had been washed five metres down a drain pipe. "I thought no, it sounds like a kitty cat and I looked further down and saw it was a baby", said Lovedale.

It is believed authorities were alerted to the situation after a passerby heard the baby's cries. "Rescue efforts are underway try to rescue it", he said.

That was the plan all along. "If that was a normal year, on reflection, maybe we wouldn't have made so many changes". But Gatland warned: " Italy will be hurting after last weekend, but they are a different proposition in Rome".

Emergency services had to dig down to the pipe where the baby was trapped, before cutting the pipe and carefully extracting the baby, said Robert Mckenzie, KZN EMS spokesperson. "We thank God for her".

Emergency crews spent three hours trying to reach the infant, who was lodged some 23ft down the drain.

Others have also been saying that the mother of the baby should not be judged because no one knows her circumstances.

Rescue Care Paramedics spokesman, Garrith Jamieson, said he spoke to the trauma doctor at the hospital and reported that the baby girl is doing very well.

The baby was transported to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital this morning.
