Netflix’s Roma wins best film and best director awards at BAFTAs

The Absolutely Fabulous star began the British film awards ceremony on Sunday night with a series of gags about the nominated films and stars, but some viewers were shocked at her quip about the film BlacKkKlansman.

Turning to her co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, she said: "As far as I'm concerned all three of us are the same and should be the leads and it's weird we can't do that".

Olivia Colman is riding high at the moment, with her role of Queen Anne in The Favourite particularly garnering her praise and numerous awards already.

USA actor Rami Malek poses with the award for a Leading Actor for his work on the film "Bohemian Rhapsody" at the BAFTA at the Royal Albert Hall in London, February 10, 2019.

Film editor Thelma Schoonmaker was awarded a fellowship for her decades of work with directors, most especially Martin Scorcese.

"Roma" is also nominated for best picture at the Oscars later this month, which has propelled Netflix into the Hollywood club of elite filmmakers despite fears that its streaming business model could undermine the industry.

"We're having an unbelievable night aren't we", Colman told her fellow "The Favourite" nominees as she picked up the award.

Writer-director Alfonso Cuaron's black-and-white memoir Roma was the big victor at the BAFTA Awards ceremony at Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday.

"She doesn't take herself too seriously and she enjoys what she's doing", Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos said after winning the Bafta for outstanding British film. "We're going to get so (drunk) later", Colman told her fellow The Favourite nominees as she picked up the award to loud cheers.

Other winners included Rami Malek who took Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Mahershala Ali who was named Best Supporting Actor for his part in "Green Book".

A Star Is Born won for its original music, with the film's writer, director, star and composer Bradley Cooper collecting the prize.

In his acceptance speech, Malek thanked the late Queen's frontman as "the greatest outsider of them all".
