UFC Notebook: Whittaker pulls out of main event hours before UFC 234

Two judges scored the fight 30-27 to Adesanya and the third had it 29-28.

While Silva has been in numerous high-profile bouts over the course of his illustrious career, it was some added pressure for Adesanya, who has been tabbed as one the promotion's rising stars.

Silva eventually started charging forward more and more as time ticked away on the clock and that's when he managed to tag Adesanya with some stiff shots of his own.

Israel Adesanya had the torched passed to him from a legend while putting on a show in the impromptu UFC 234 main event on Saturday night.

Originally billed as the co-main event, the Adesanya-Silva showdown was elevated to main event status, and it didn't disappoint.

Whittaker's title defence against Kelvin Gastelum was canned but UFC president Dana White confirmed after Adesanya's victory that Whittaker would hold the belt "for now".

"I earned this, you know what I mean?" During the fight itself, Anderson Silva threw all of the devilish tricks he is renowned for, into the pot, but in the end, Israel Adesanya proved himself to be quite the student of the fight game, and quite befitting of his nickname: The Last Stylebender. White also said that had Whittaker fought, his medical issue could have been fatal. "Crazy week. I showed up to work, a lot of people didn't even though it's out of their hands". In a devastating, fight-day twist, however, Whittaker was forced out of this battle with a hernia, and rushed into surgery on the very evening he was supposed to compete.

"Hopefully this thing is only going to be four to six weeks, according to the doctors", he said at the post-fight press conference. And although the Brazilian fought back with a couple of punches to Adesanya's chin, the Kiwi won the first round.

Unlike in Whittaker's last supposed title defense, there were no problems at the weigh-in as the scale totaled 185 pounds for Whittaker compared to 184 for Gastelum.

"I love my job", Silva said following the fight. "And here I am, I'm gonna go home with the belt". "I continue to fight because this is my heart". "I'm going to go back to training, go back to see my family and maybe I fight in Curitiba".
