NBA Trade Grades: Wizards dumping Markieff Morris to Pelicans

The Pelicans acquired Morris on Wednesday from the Washington Wizards.

The Wizards are wheeling and dealing before Thursday's trade deadline.

Their next move was to deal Markieff Morris and a future second-round pick to the New Orleans Pelicans for Wesley Johnson.

The Wizards seemingly made this deal for financial reasons, while the Pelicans likely just wanted to take a flyer on a potential impact player.

Both players are now on expiring contracts, but the Pelicans will have Morris' Bird rights so it will be interesting to see what they do with that this summer. The Wizards had been trying to get back under the luxury tax threshold, and after dealing Otto Porter the Chicago Bulls earlier in the day, Washington appears to be in position to accomplish that goal.

Johnson, meanwhile, has only appeared in 26 games this year for the Pelicans.

Beal is averaging a career-high 24.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 37 minutes per game this season. The main catch in the deal is the future pick the Pelicans will receive as they are basically swapping players on expiring deals but getting a pick back for nearly nothing. He is shooting 38.0 percent from beyond the arc in the 14.5 minutes per game when he has played.
