Alicia Keys says Grammys will be about the ‘power of music’

No one, really, besides Alicia Keys should have been in the running to host the Grammys this year.

This will be Alicia Keys' first time hosting the ceremony - which is returning to the West Coast this year - but it won't be her first time on the Grammy stage.

"You know I've won 15 times", Keys sang back with a grin, much to the crowd's delight. "I would love to ensure the peace and the good energy in the room so that our shoulders can all drop and we can feel the true blessing of having music as a universal language".

Grammy Award winners Alessia Cara, Julian Edelman, Eve, John Mayer, Bob Newhart, Smokey Robinson, Meghan Trainor, and hit DJ and producer Swizz Beatz - who's married to host Alicia Keys - will also take the stage to give away some of the night's exciting awards. LL Cool J was the longtime host until James Corden took over in 2017 and 2018.

According to Billboard.com, at a Grammys preview event on Thursday the star promised her compere stint would be about the "power of music" and added: "We're all very excited, and the energy you're going to feel is far different than anything you've ever felt".

Women have a larger presence at this year's Grammys after being almost muted at the 2018 show.

After backlash over the lack of female nominees last year, 2019 sees mostly young women in the best new artist category and five women competing with three men for album of the year.

Other performers on the broadcast will include Gaga, Morris, Musgraves, Mendes, Carlile, Cardi B, Dolly Parton, Little Big Town, Katy Perry, Mark Ronson, Dan + Shay, H.E.R., Post Malone, Janelle Monáe, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chloe x Halle, Travis Scott and Diana Ross.

While the remaining lyrics are amusing, what stands out the most in this performance is Keys' insane vocal range as she effortlessly masters the belted notes and riffs that Lady Gaga performs in the Oscar-nominated film. "And I feel so blessed to be able to be coming now, just in support of so many wonderful people that are honored - especially so many women that are [going to be] honored - and are gonna be celebrated that night".
