Stanford fellow accuses Virginia Lt. Gov. of sexual assault

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday waded into the race and sex scandals engulfing Virginia's three leading Democrats and suggested the turmoil could improve his Republican Party's chances in the state.

The latest blow came Wednesday, when Herring, a two-term Democrat, admitted to appearing in blackface at a 1980 party, releasing a statement to get ahead of persistent rumors that something had happened during his years at University of Virginia.

Virginia is embroiled in political turmoil following the discovery last week of a racist photo on Northam's medical school yearbook page.

His troubles worsened on Wednesday as the woman went public with a detailed version of the 2004 encounter at a Boston hotel.

In the days since, Northam's administration has tried to inch its way back to normalcy while some of his top staff and advisers wonder if such a thing will ever be possible.

After Herring comes the speaker of the state House, Kirk Cox, a conservative Republican.

The operative added: "I think where we are today doesn't cause permanent damage, but if they stick around then it could". "But because of our ignorance and glib attitudes - and because we did not have an appreciation for the experiences and perspectives of others - we dressed up and put on wigs and brown makeup".

Lucas said the black lawmakers told Herring they needed to discuss their next steps among themselves.

But he added: "This conduct is in no way reflective of the man I have become in the almost 40 years since". While Fairfax has asked for his family and Tyson's family to be respected and given privacy, he has continually stuck to his initial statement that he has nothing to hide.

First the governor, Ralph Northam, was accused of racism after a photo from his medical school yearbook page emerged showing two people, one wearing blackface and the other dressed as a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

With its historic ties to 19th-century U.S. minstrel shows in which white performers would caricature black slaves, blackface is widely seen as racist in modern America, though it remained a trope of popular television shows and movies through the 1980s.

Northam, 59, initially said he was one of the two individuals in the photo, then changed his story to say neither figure was him. But he acknowledged he once used shoe polish to blacken his face and look like Michael Jackson at a dance contest in Texas in 1984, when he was in the Army. No Democratic presidential contender candidate issued any statement calling for the resignations of Herring or Fairfax, whose accuser, Vanessa Tyson, is represented by the same law firm that represented future Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford. According to Tyson's statement, she had a consensual romantic encounter with Fairfax that turned into non-consensual sexual assault.

Scott himself was previously accused of sexual harassment by a former aide, who said he touched her inappropriately when she was working in his Washington office in 2013.

"After the assault, I suffered from both deep humiliation and shame", Tyson writes.

In her statement, Tyson said she didn't speak about the assault for years and suppressed her memories of it. Fairfax in a statement on Wednesday described that incident as consensual.

Fairfax said Monday that the reports of him committing sexual assault are false and the encounter was "100% consensual". In it, she claimed she never spoke to Fairfax after the alleged assault.

"If Democrats don't take this seriously and begin an investigation, their credibility is lost", Nance said.
