Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews Agree To Five-Year, $58.17M Extension

The Auston Matthews contract extension is done.

Certainly not for the next five seasons.

The Leafs and forward Auston Matthews agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep Matthews in blue and white through the 2023-2024 season, the team announced on Tuesday.

The money is great.

There was also history in the broadcast booth with 85-year-old Bob Cole calling the game. "I'm just paying attention to this team in here and wanting to win". "That is the ultimate goal".

Matthews was originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the first round (1st overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft.

Dubas made sure to thank Matthews' agents, Judd Moldaver and Jeff Jackson, and the player's parents, Brian and Ema, during his initial comments. He's an elite scoring threat from the wing and has made the All-Star team in each of his three National Hockey League seasons. He comes from a great family, so he has that instilled in him. And there will be tax savings for Matthews. Things didn't look too good (major back surgery in 2006 to fix two herniated discs), a first round (OHL) pick and not playing for a year and half.

Negotiations began last summer and were amicable most of the way. "It's very special, I feel extremely honoured". Either he needs to be more cautious with what he says in the media, or the Marner camp needs to get this deal done sooner rather than later.

Ferris said the Leafs tabled a low offer last summer, but added that's standard practice at that time of year.

"Neither I nor Mitch wanted any distractions during the playing season", Ferris said on Wednesday.

"We were playing well and then we just got careless and we never really seemed to be able to get it back", lamented Babcock, who liked his team's start.

Trump suggests border, shutdown compromise possible
Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., a negotiator, said it was "unrealistic" to think there would be no funding for physical barriers. Trump is willing to negotiate his $5.7 billion wall money request, but says he must have some cash for fencing.

"We want to accomplish our ultimate goal, which is a Stanley Cup and make this city proud. There's lots of talent in this room and we want to play together", Rielly said.

"Things are going in the right direction, we're not far off".

"Honestly, I didn't really see (the comments)", said Marner. "Just something that was there".

Matthews, 21, would have been a restricted free agent after this season.

With over $71 million locked up in 14 players, signing Mitch Marner this off-season becomes the new priority. This is a great place to play hockey, we have a great management, we have a great team in this locker-room.

"At the same time when you're a good team and you win games, sometimes they're not very pretty but you still won them".

Boucher thought his team, up 2-1, should have put the game away in the second period but could not convert good scoring chances. Hats off to them, but we have to be a little bit tighter. It doesn't fall on the players.

Contract negotiations are all about compromise and communication, and Dubas accepts the responsibility of keeping the team - now second in the Eastern Conference - together.

"Those guys are all going to be signed", Babcock said. Guys used to do that all the time.

There's a long time yet before rival teams can even attempt to get his signature on an offer sheet and the Leafs are nearly sure to match if that happens. You have to do the math.

The other big benefit to players is that they have more upfront money - no small consideration in a league with non-guaranteed contracts. Marner sounded genuinely enthused about his buddy's new contract, and sent him a text once word broke Tuesday joking that they're going to have to figure out where to be neighbours once they enter a higher tax bracket next season.
