Whitaker Stuns Committee by Telling Judiciary Chairman ‘Your Five Minutes Is Up’

The House Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing on oversight of the Justice Department at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, featuring testimony from Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.

Whitaker vented frustration early on as he repeatedly insisted that he would not discuss his conversations with Trump and tried to shift attention to the conventional work of the Justice Department.

Whitaker had threatened not to show up to the hearing after Democrats approved a subpoena if he didn't answer all their questions, but the committee chairman dropped the threat Thursday night. I'm asking you a question.

In his opening remarks, Whitaker said he was ready to answer questions -but not all of them.

Nadler also said Democrats would continue to seek answers once Whitaker left the position. Whitaker's testimony comes one day after the Senate Judiciary Committee narrowly voted to advance William Barr's nomination to replace Jeff Sessions as attorney general along party lines.

"It is not credible that you both interviewed for a job handling the President's response to the special counsel investigation and never conveyed your opinions about that investigation to the White House", Nadler said.

'The attorney general was in the middle of saying something.

He criticised the committee for prematurely and unnecessarily authorising a subpoena for him even though he had agreed to appear.

"This is a breach of the agreement", and a "striking departure from long-standing processes".

Collins attempted to derail the hearing completely with a motion to adjourn, before Whitaker had even been sworn in.

"I think he's an outstanding person".

"I have been on the record about my respect for Bob Mueller", Whitaker said.

Former Republican governor Chris Christie has known U.S. President Donald Trump for 17 years, but says the advice he's offered hasn't always been heeded.

After Mr Whitaker, the former chief of staff to Mr Sessions, was temporarily appointed to the position, it emerged he had written several op-eds that were sharply critical of Mr Mueller's probe. If you want to ask the chairman for time of your own, you can do it. "The Chairman should focus on helping the American people, rather than wasting time playing pointless political games".

In the days before Friday's hearing, Nadler and Whitaker sparred over the conditions of the appearance, as NPR reported Friday.

The vote doesn't issue a subpoena to Whitaker but allows committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler to do so if Whitaker is uncooperative. He asked Whitaker to consult with the White House ahead of the hearing and tell the committee whether he would invoke privilege. "Answer the question, please".

Nadler accused Whitaker of stalling but got pushback from the Republican Collins, who said Jackson Lee's demand of "yes or no" was inappropriate.

"When did we start subpoenaing witnesses who come in voluntarily?" "It has everything to do, as we found out this morning in a document dump from the Democratic side of this committee and also another committee, that this is nothing more than a character assassination". "There has been no breakdown here".

"We had the show yesterday", Collins said. "They're not anxious about him showing up-he's already said he's coming".
