Democrats float 'Green New Deal' to end fossil fuel era

After Democrats won the House majority in November, Ocasio-Cortez emerged as an outspoken advocate for combating climate change and pushed for the select committee to be focused on formulating a Green New Deal that would move the country toward 100 percent renewable electricity over the next 10 years.

"It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive", Pelosi told Politico on Wednesday.

Ocasio-Cortez said she was not offended that Pelosi called the resolution "the green dream".

The Republican Study Committee pointed out the dichotomy Thursday, shortly after the New York Democrat launched her sweeping environmental plan aimed at achieving zero-net greenhouse-gas emissions in 10 years.

The Green New Deal was put into the media spotlight by a youth coalition called the Sunrise Movement and Ocasio-Cortez, 29, the youngest woman to serve in Congress.

An outline of the proposal, backed by dozens of congressional lawmakers and the climate change activist group Sunrise Movement, was released early Thursday by Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey, Democrat from MA.

While setting lofty goals, the plan does not explicitly call for eliminating the use of fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas, a nod to pragmatism that may disappoint some of Ocasio-Cortez's strongest supporters.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the following Democrats were selected to the new climate change committee: "Reps. And so that's really what we're trying to accomplish with the Green New Deal". She said she doesn't "consider that to be a dismissive term".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she welcomes "the enthusiasm" of backers of a Green New Deal, but she stopped short of supporting it. The Free Beacon has more details on the outline of the Democratic proposal here.

Freshman progressives and other Democrats who have come to support the Green New Deal were frustrated when it was previously revealed the committee would lack much of the power that other congressional committees possess.

Well, Ocasio-Cortez will need an income after she gets primaried out of Congress, I suppose ...

The reaction on Twitter was unrestrained in its criticism, while other simply poked fun at Ocasio-Cortez's plan.

Pelosi said Reps. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Joe Neguse of Colorado, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Sean Casten of IL will serve on the panel, along with three Californians: Julia Brownley, Jared Huffman and Mike Levin.

The 14-page resolution envisions a shift to 100% renewable and zero-emission energy sources, and calls for the creation of millions of new high-wage jobs to help wipe out poverty.
