The group's creation comes less than a year after Mill, 31, was released from jail after his unexpectedly heavy sentence for a parole violation sparked protests over racial biases in USA probation laws.

Meek infamously served five months in prison in Philly for probation violations on a decade-old drug and gun conviction from an allegedly tainted trial.

"The mission of the REFORM Alliance is to dramatically reduce the number of people who are unjustly under the control of the criminal justice system - starting with probation and parole". Flanked by a group of very high-profile supporters, including Jay-Z and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, Mill announced the launch of the Reform Alliance.

Jay-Z applauded Meek's activism and said the rapper's story "sparked the match for the nation".

Black people are incarcerated at more than five times the rate of white people in the United States, according to the NAACP civil rights organization. "We're all prisoners to this, until everyone's free, no one's free".

Meek Mill explained the importance and need for prison reform in a statement, writing, "Creating the REFORM Alliance is one of the most important things I've ever done in my life".

Since his April release, Meek has gotten major support from people like Jay, Kraft, as well as Rubin, and Meek said he wants to help others in prison who've spent long amounts of time there for low-level crimes.

In their remarks, both Mill and Rubin cited 2017 Bureau of Justice Statistics figures that show 2.1 million USA citizens are incarcerated and 4.5 million are either on probation or parole.

Do you think they will be successful or not? "You grow up around murder on a daily basis, you grow up in drug-infested neighborhoods on a daily basis". The organizations have set a goal of freeing at least one million people trapped in that system.

"This is not a right or left issue, it's a wrong or right issue", Jones said.

The organization's high-powered executive board is made up of co-founders Shawn "JAY-Z" Carter, Kraft Group CEO and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Brooklyn Nets co-owner and philanthropic investor Clara Wu Tsai, Third Point LLC CEO and founder Daniel S. Loeb, Galaxy Digital CEO and founder Michael E. Novogratz and Vista Equity Partners chairman and CEO Robert F. Smith. "We're going to free a country to be its best self".

The act includes provisions to ease heavy sentences for certain offenders and gives judges more discretion in sentencing low-level criminals.
