James Gandolfini's Son Michael to Play Young Tony Soprano in Prequel Movie!

James Gandolfini's Son Michael to Play Young Tony Soprano in Prequel Movie!

The son of James Gandolfini has been cast as the young Tony Soprano in the planned "Sopranos" prequel, "The Many Saints of Newark".

Created by David Chase, The Sopranos, with its rich, complicated depiction of an organized crime boss, his mental health issues, and the family (and "family") that surrounds him, is often considered by critics as the unofficial start of the era of "prestige TV".

It will follow Dickie Moltisanti, mentor to both the young Tony Soprano and his father, Johnny Boy.

For The Many Saints of Newark, Gandolfini joins Jon Bernthal (Marvel's The Punisher) and Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring franchise), who were recently cast in undisclosed roles. "I'm thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with [original series creator] David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark". Many African-Americans and Italian-American "gangsters" died during the riots, with the final tally of 26 people dead and more than 700 injured.

The series earned James Gandolfini three Primetime Emmys, one Golden Globe and three SAG awards.

Michael Gandolfini has been gaining prominence in the acting world as of late, with a breakout turn in HBO series The Deuce coming a year ago.

David Chase, the creator of the iconic mob series, and the movie's producers reportedly "engaged in an extensive audition process" before offering Gandolfini the part.

"Tony will be a character in the film, and as was mentioned throughout "The Sopranos" series, my character was an important person in his life, and it examines that relationship as well", Nivola said.

Alan Taylor is directing the movie for New Line. Nicole Lambert and Marcus Viscidi are executive producing.

Characters from The Sopranos (which just celebrated its 20th anniversary!) are expected to return.
