Hulu cuts price of most popular plan by 25 percent

Hulu today announced that it's lowering the monthly cost of its simplest plan - from $7.99 a month, to $5.99 a month.

One of Hulu's chief competitors, Netflix, did just the opposite recently-it raised the prices of all its plans by a dollar or two per month. The price of its on-demand plan without ads will remain the same at $12. Shares were down another 1% mid-Wednesday.

Hulu's advertising revenue grew more than 45 percent to almost $1.5 billion in 2018, according to the company.

Its pricing changes will take effect starting February 26 for new subscribers, while existing users will see the changes after that date.

Hulu with Live TV will jump from $39.99 to $44.99, however, largely due to more channels being offered.

See Cheyenne's View of the Blood Moon Eclipse
A 'super blood Moon' eclipse might sound cool enough, but the total lunar eclipse of January 2019 has now gone down in history. Such a scene has been long-sought by astronomers, but proved elusive until now, even with the frequency of lunar eclipses.

"That mitigates the risk of churn from consumers re-evaluating their subscriptions; it is still the same cost for both", he said in a research note. This is an ad-supported plan, so you'll have to sit through the occasional commercial when streaming a TV show.

"Hulu is still in the same spot they would be, the No. 3 player in the states", said Neil Macker, analyst at Morningstar.

The streaming landscape is changing as more media companies are launching their own services. At that point it will own 60 percent of the service and may do with it pretty much what they want, perhaps including swallowing it up into the upcoming Disney+ streaming service that is coming sometime this year.

The streaming service's catalogue of content also includes originals, such as the popular series The Handmaid's Tale, which is based on Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name, and Castle Rock, which draw inspiration for Stephen King's literary universe.
