MI football reportedly hires Alabama WR coach Josh Gattis as offensive coordinator

According to multiple reports, Alabama co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Josh Gattis will take over as Michigan's offensive coordinator.

"It is an honor and a privilege to join the University of MI football family under Coach Harbaugh, one of the most successful head coaches in all of football", Gattis said in Michigan's release. He was set to join forces with Maryland's new head coach Mike Locksley, with whom he shared the role of offensive coordinator at Alabama in 2018.

Gattis joins a staff that was coordinated by-committee in 2018, with Harbaugh, assistant head coach/passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton, wide receivers coach Jim McElwain and the rest of the offensive staff participating in game-planning and play calling.

In a statement released by Michigan Thursday afternoon, Harbaugh said, "The offense and passing games under Josh's direction have achieved at a very high level throughout his coaching career".

Health experts say flu vaccine more effective this year

MI finished 50th in total offense and 21st in scoring offense this season. Locksley was hired in December as Maryland's new head coach. Alabama's passing offense finished No. 6 in the nation averaging, averaging 323.6 yards per game.

MI was without a bonafide offensive coordinator in 2018, with offensive duties being relegated to pass game coordinator Pep Hamilton and run game/offensive line coach Ed Warinner - with Jim Harbaugh having the final say. The offense was based around the running game as the Wolverines ran the ball 42 times per game and passed it just 26 times per game.

The Michigan offense bookended the season with poor performances, however. With starting quarterback Shea Patterson and most of the offense returning, Gattis should have plenty of weapons to improve the unit in 2019.
