Suspect to be charged with murder of missing British backpacker Grace Millane

The 26-year-old man was questioned by detectives after he was traced by police to at an address in central Auckland on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Beard said Ms Millane's passport, necklace and watch were still missing and police wanted anyone with information on these or anything else to get in touch on 0800 676 255.

"He was brought back to the Auckland Central Police Station and is now speaking to us in relation to the murder of Grace Millane".

The 22-year-old, from Essex, described by her father as "lovely" and "family-orientated", vanished in New Zealand a week ago.

Officers and forensic experts are still carrying out a scene examination at the CityLife hotel where Ms Millane was last seen on Saturday 1 December.

Members of Millane's family have made appeals on Facebook for information.

"Grace's family have been advised of this development and they are devastated."

"Her family are devastated", he said.

"At this point our enquiries have not led us to any further confirmed sightings of Grace, and the last known sighting is of her entering the Citylife Hotel", he said.

The 26-year-old being questioned is the person of interest police mentioned yesterday.

Asked why police were now treating Millane's disappearance as a murder, Beard said it was a combination of factors.

Otorgan más libertades a agentes federales para usar armas letales
También dice que será legítimo el uso de arma de fuego " para impedir la fuga de quien represente ese peligro inminente , y hasta lograr su detención".

Miss Millane, who graduated from the University of Lincoln in September, had been travelling alone in New Zealand for two weeks, following a six-week group trip through South America. "We still don't know where Grace is".

"We know that he was with her on the Saturday evening and went to a number of places before going to the Citylife Hotel", he told reporters.

"Grace is still missing and we want to find her", he added.

He tearfully explained that his daughter has never been out of contact with her family for such a long period of time, usually contacting them on social media.

Detectives have since assessed Grace's belongings, which were left at the backpackers where she was staying.

Asked if the pair had met on the Tinder dating app, the detective said: "I'm not going to speculate on how they met".

That was especially so for David Millane, as police had met the distraught father, but also for other family in the United Kingdom, including Millane's mother Gillian, unable to travel to New Zealand because she was recovering from an operation.

Millane's father David, a millionaire property developer, flew into New Zealand early yesterday.

Police released images of Ms Millane's watch and necklace earlier on Saturday.

He said: "As part of our investigation, we have reviewed hours and hours of CCTV footage and this will continue throughout the weekend".
