SpaceX Launches Rocket Carrying Christmas Turkey and Fruitcake to the ISS

However, as soon as this crucial part was phased out, Falcon's first stage (most expensive portion of the rocket) that was supposed to navigate itself back to the earth malfunctioned. The rocket landing was not required for SpaceX's main mission: delivering 5,600 lbs.

However, the SpaceX first-stage booster, which was supposed to touch down on the ground at Cape Carnival after the lift-off, went out-of-control and crashed in the Atlantic Ocean. "All told, another great day for SpaceX and NASA".

Most recently, a Falcon 9 that launched from California included a booster with two previous launches under its belt.

Today's launch was delayed by a day on short notice thanks to some moldy mouse chow. According to the CRS-16 mission overview, after the Cygnus leaves the space station for the first time, it can navigate to a higher orbit and release the cubesats.

In its view, those rate hikes are putting the brakes on borrowing and hiring, keeping inflation under control. Wall Street's financial shares, which are particularly sensitive to bond market swings, dropped 4.4 per cent.

"Recovery ship dispatched", tweeted SpaceX chief Elon Musk. They're away from their families and friends for months on end, don't have access to numerous basic creature comforts we all enjoy, and live on a somewhat limited selection of food... unless, of course, it's Christmas. According to NASA, the Rocket experiment will test the reliability in space of a dental glue activated by ultraviolet light, while the Groot experiment will explore an alternative method for watering plants in a zero-gravity environment.

The Dragon was the third space station supply ship launched to the station in less than a month.

In late August, sensors detected a small pressure drop in the station's air supply that was traced to a leak in the upper habitation module of the Soyuz MS-09 vehicle.

Experiments onboard the SpaceX Dragon capsule include studies on wound healing in space, as well as two studies by students inspired by Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" will also launch to the orbiting laboratory. The company expects to start launching station crews next year. Kononenko arrived at the station Monday along with Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques and NASA astronaut Anne McClain. The others return home on December 20, leaving only three for Christmas dinner, not counting the mice and worms.
