Operation Pollino: 'Ndrangheta mafia struck in Europe-wide sting

Scores of members of the 'Ndrangheta Italian mafia group have been arrested in raids across Europe.

The 'Ndrangheta, a mafia organisation that operates out of the Calabria region of southern Italy, is one of the largest crime syndicates in the world, and is thought to make billions of pounds through cocaine trafficking every year.

German prosecutors said 65 premises linked to the southern Italy-based organised crime group were also being searched.

The 'Ndrangheta - which derives its meaning from the Greek word for "heroism" - is made up of numerous village and family-based clans in Calabria, the rural, mountainous and under-developed "toe" of Italy's boot.

Officials hailed Wednesday's operation as a serious blow to the group.

Fred Westerbeke, chief prosecutor of the Dutch Prosecutor's office, said authorities seized roughly $2.27 million in the raids, along with amounts of ecstasy and cocaine.

In January police arrested almost 170 people, including mayors and businessmen and local administrators, in similar raids across Italy and Germany.

Italian police said the sweep targeted the 'Ndrangheta and its "projections across South America".

Además, repitió victoria en las elecciones de 1989 ante Sixte Cambra y en 1997 frente a Ángel Fernández. Bajo su mandato, de 22 años, el Barcelona logró un total de 140 títulos.

'Ndrangheta is one of five major world crime organizations operating out of Italy. The focus was on the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which borders the Netherlands and Belgium, and Bavaria to the south. His arrest was among the 46 people taken into custody.

The group has links with drug cartels in Colombia and Mexico, Italian anti-Mafia prosecutor Federico Cafiero de Raho said in The Hague.

Officials said by midday of the operation, nearly 4,000 kilos of cocaine and hundreds of kilos of other drugs were seized.

He added, groups of the 'Ndrangheta and its allies, have infiltrated the ports around Europe and "polluted" lawyers and accountants in many countries on their payrolls.

On Tuesday, the man accused of being the head of the Sicilian mafia, Settimo Mineo, an 80-year-old jeweller, was pictured being led away as police on the Italian island scooped up dozens of other suspected mafia members.

Dutch NOS television said the 'Ndrangheta were mainly active in the Netherlands in drug smuggling through the country's huge flower export market.

Jeweller Mineo, 80, was detained along with at least 45 others just before he was due to be appointed official heir to notorious mafia boss Toto Riina who died in prison past year.
