Newcastle owner wants club sold before January window

Mike Ashley has told Sky News he wants to sell Newcastle before the January transfer window and that talks are at a "more progressed stage" than ever.

Asked on Monday if a deal being struck before the window opens was realistic, Ashley said the word "possible" would be a more accurate description.

The businessman's update on the sale process are likely to be welcomed by many fans, though there may also be raised eyebrows over his talk of recent good form.

Prior to that, Ashley and businesswoman Amanda Staveley's PDC Capital Partners had failed to reach an agreement for a sale in January.

Ashley bought former owner Sir John Hall's 41.6 per cent stake in the club back in 2007.

Newcastle take on Everton in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

"I'd like it to be before the January transfer window".

Businesswoman Amanda Staveley tried to buy Newcastle for £250m previous year, but she could not agree a deal with Ashley.

"Realistic? It's possible. Realistic is maybe too strong a word".

Ashley, who did not name the interested party, added: "Hopefully we can carry on the good form - just recent good form - and we can get the deal done".

Sections of the fanbase have regularly protested against Ashley and the running of the club during his eleven-year tenure at the helm and again made their feelings heard during Saturday's 3-0 defeat by West Ham.

That has left manager Rafael Benitez's future in doubt with the 58-year-old Spaniard, who is out of contract at the end of this season, having been disappointed with the club's transfer dealings for much of his reign to date.
