Koreas | Ban Ki-moon urges North to take denuclearization steps

What Happened: U.S. President Donald Trump has said his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will likely take place in January or February 2019 and that three locations are now under consideration, Reuters reported December 1.

Trump's latest praise for Kim, in the formal setting of a summit with Moon, shows that he is still emphasising his personal rapport despite stalled nuclear talks.

Trump, who met Kim in Singapore in June, said on Saturday that he is likely to meet the North Korean leader for a second time in January or February, with three sites for their meeting under consideration.

New Zealand is active in the monitoring of United Nations sanctions against North Korea, deploying an Air Force P-3K2 plane to patrol global waters in North Asia for signs of vessels undertaking activities such as ship-to-ship transfers.

Speaking to reporters while on an official state visit to New Zealand, the South Korean President stressed that a Seoul summit would serve to "accelerate the denuclearization in the Korean peninsula".

"The message is that President Trump has very favourable views towards Chairman Kim and he likes him", Mr Moon told reporters aboard a flight from Argentina to New Zealand, where he started a three-day state visit on Sunday.

"We're getting along very well", Trump said aboard Air Force One on Thursday as he prepared to travel to the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In a speech to the leaders on the last day of the G20, President Moon shared his administration's ambitious goal of cutting the country's reliance on coal and nuclear power and increasing the proportion of electricity it gets from renewable sources, ... something he's promised to raise to 20 percent by the year 2030.

New Zealand has been working with the United States to help small Pacific nations audit and strengthen their shipping registers to avoid vessels with ties to North Korea using their flags to skirt sanctions.

Moon said a second summit between Kim and Trump will prove to be the "most critical moment" for North Korea's denuclearisation.

Instead, the second Trump-Kim meeting will be where a "verifiable plan" to disclose the sites and weapons must be reached, Pence said. Their two previous summits were held at the countries' shared border village of Panmunjom.

If that happens, he would be the first North Korean leader to do so since the end of the 1950-1953 Korean War, though the plan is still unclear.
