Iran’s Rouhani threatens to cut off Gulf oil

The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran and USA officials say they aim to reduce Iran's oil exports to zero in a bid to curb the Islamic Republic's missile programme and regional influence.

Iranian state TV quoted Rohani as saying on December 4 that "if someday, the United States decides to block Iran's oil [exports], no oil will be exported from the Persian Gulf".

Tehran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz and halt Persian Gulf oil exports if its own tankers are blocked from using the waterway.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani gave the warning on Tuesday, following comments from the USA that sanctions have already succeeded in cutting Iranian oil exports.

Rouhani last threatened to close the Gulf in July when he warned the United States "should not play with the lion's tail".

Pompeo, who also met with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in Brussels on the fringes of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit on Monday, said the test violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the Iran nuclear deal signed by world powers with the Islamic republic.

Rouhani did not say which subjects the United States wanted to negotiate about and nor did he specify whether he was referring to the Iranian calendar year, which begins in March.

The US and Israel can not tolerate the existence of a powerful Iran, he said, adding that the Iranian nation would never bow down to them.

"Based on the information we have, it's not so".

The Iranian Students' News Agency reported, citing Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi, that Iran has deployed 58 fleets to the northern Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, situated just outside of the Persian Gulf - the source to a major part of the world's oil exports.

"This appears to be propaganda aimed at discouraging people", Zarif added.

But the agency quoted diplomats as saying that, with United States threats of retribution for sanctions-busting unrelenting, the goals of the nascent trade mechanism could be scaled back to encompass only less sensitive items such as humanitarian and food products.

Tehran's foreign ministry said its missile arsenal did not break worldwide law, despite the U.S. slapping more sanctions on Iran over the programme.

"When (Americans) say their target is the Iranian government and there won't be pressure on the sick, the elderly and the weak in society, it's a lie", Jahangiri said, according to Irna.
