Mitch McConnell Keeps Top Senate Post as Congress Selects Leaders

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is the only current leader facing a challenge to keep his job in the minority. Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel tweeted, citing Senate wins in Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota and Tennessee, among others. Schumer reiterated on Wednesday that the $1.6 billion Congress allotted earlier this year is sufficient, but McCarthy is calling for $5 billion, and it's a sure bet House Republicans will use their final month in the majority to push for as much of that as they can.

Both McCarthy and Jordan, a leader of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, had announced their bid for the position. Jordan is former chairman of a break-away conservative group known as the House Freedom Caucus.

During a closed-door session with House Republicans, the California lawmaker took a decisive victory against Jordan, bringing in 159 votes to the OH representative's 43 votes. Democrats, meanwhile, have obtained the majority in the House of Representatives. "I think, for the first time, there is a legitimate chance for a third-party candidate".

Which leader would you depend on in a political crisis to make an unselfish decision for the common good?

For now, Republicans will retain their dominance in both chambers, although Democrats are already ramping up challenges to their partisan rivals and Republican President Donald Trump. He succeeded on the money front, transferring roughly $5.7 million to candidates in just two weeks in October, but failed to keep numerous seats in his home state.

Here are a few areas where House Democrats will likely look to exercise their newly won power. Since the latter is all it takes to be elected minority leader, McCarthy's victory Wednesday was never really in question.

Perhaps the most hotly contested Senate seat, which may not be officially decided for weeks, is down in Florida. Sinema won Arizona's open U.S. Senate seat in a race that was among the most closely watched in the nation, beating McSally in the battle to replace GOP Sen.

Wall St. rout drags down oil prices
Just months ago Saudi Arabia , under pressure from President Donald Trump, was opening up the taps in a bid to prevent $100 oil. In Vienna, the IAEA said Monday that Iran was sticking to the terms of a nuclear deal reached with global powers in 2015.

That's the upshot of the GOP's loss in the midterms last week. Scalise forged a close bond with his colleagues and President Trump during his recovery and worked hard after Ryan's retirement announcement to raise money and stump for Republican candidates.

Scalise was considering running for House speaker if Republicans kept their majority, but opted to stay in his current post as whip.

The elder Cheney, who served as GOP conference chair from 1987 to 1989, was present for Wednesday's vote for his daughter. The number three leadership slot is typically in charge of messaging and acting as a liaison between leadership and rank and file members. The position is now held by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, but she is not seeking re-election to the post. Even Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents are split - 44% back her and 46% want another Democrat to take the lead.

The California Republican has leveraged his alliance with Trump to his advantage on Capitol Hill, where the president looms large over the House GOP conference. "We're the small fish in a very big pond right now". "The next two years will shape the key issues of our time, and for many years to come".

[A Green New Deal] means creating a committee tasked specifically to write policy on creating jobs and moving our country off fossil fuels over the designated 12 years that the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)] has given us.

Two Democrats leading the rebellion against Nancy Pelosi were bullish Tuesday evening about their efforts to stop her from winning the speakership, promising to soon reveal that they had enough support to cause a major shake-up at the top of their caucus.

In the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to win another term, but the most interesting race is down-ballot, where Republicans are poised to elect their first woman to leadership in nearly a decade, as they try to smooth the optics of a GOP side that's dominated by men.
