David Schwimmer lookalike 'thief' who became Twitter sensation is arrested in London

British police thanked "Friends" star David Schwimmer on Tuesday after arresting an alleged thief whose case went viral on social media because of his uncanny resemblance to the USA actor.

The actor even took to Twitter to plead his innocence, posting a spoof video in which he recreated the alleged theft from a restaurant in Blackpool in September.

Facebook users noticed the similarity when police posted surveillance-camera footage last month of a man carrying a carton of cans from a restaurant in Blackpool, northwest England.

Thousands of Facebook users shared the vision, with many incorporating some of Ross's most memorable lines from the hit show which ended in 2004 after 10 memorable seasons.

"Thanks to our colleagues @MetPoliceUK, a 36-year-old man was arrested in Southall last night on suspicion of theft".

"That's not Ross, it's Russ!" another said, joking about a look-a-like character in the show. "As you can see, I was in NY", he wrote. The Lancashire department made a special note of thanking Friends' actor David Schwimmer for his support. Love life DOA. It's like he's always stuck in second gear.

"We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date", the force wrote in a statement.

Eventually the public appeal proved successful for Blackpool Police, who continued the joke while confirming the arrest on Twitter.

Schwimmer apparently assisted the investigation by doing nothing more than ruling himself out of the suspect pool early.
