Barnier to brief European Union 27 on Brexit backstop agreement

Barnier to brief European Union 27 on Brexit backstop agreement

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "From what we know of the shambolic handling of these negotiations, this is unlikely to be a good deal for the country".

As I've mentioned before, the European Union is clearly more relaxed about timing - as long as a deal is signed before March - than Theresa May at this stage.

Former transport minister Jo Johnson said he chose to quit Mrs May's Government because he was concerned at reports she was planning a publicity campaign which he said amounted to a "calculated deceit". Despite resigning as Foreign Secretary and thus having no direct knowledge of the said documents, Boris Johnson slammed the deal as "vassal state stuff".

"For the first time since partition, Dublin would have more say in some aspects of the governing of Northern Ireland than London", he said.

Mr Rees-Mogg continued: "This is white flags over Whitehall".

While officials choreograph the biggest divorce deal in European Union history, it remains unclear whether May can get a deal passed by parliament where opponents have warned she is betraying Brexit by signing up the United Kingdom to European Union subjugation.

Owen Smith, a champion of the anti-Brexit group Best for Britain, said the deal would leave "the British people worse off, and our country weaker as a whole" and urged May to put it to another referendum.

DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds said that the deal as reported would leave Northern Ireland "subject to the rules and laws set in Brussels with no democratic input or any say".

However, it seems this backstop will be only temporary, with the agreement also saying an independent arbitration committee will judge when a UK-wide customs backstop could be terminated (allowing the United Kingdom to move to a free trade deal, stay within the customs union arrangement or extend the transition period). Like many leavers, he is thought to be willing to swallow a customs deal on the basis the United Kingdom could further diverge after a transition period.

It also provides for additional "deeper" provisions for Northern Ireland on customs and regulations, RTE said. France and Germany are understood to have made the point forcefully to Barnier.

According to the Financial Times, the E.U.'s Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier has said a Brexit treaty "is nearly ready".

May's Cabinet met Tuesday for an update on the talks, with the prime minister under pressure from pro-Brexit ministers not to make further concessions to the EU.

An emergency cabinet meeting has been called for Wednesday at 2pm, which sources have said is expected to last three hours. No idea what the priorities of the British government are.

Reports suggested the campaign would compare the content of any deal secured by Mrs May with the prospect of a chaotic no-deal withdrawal, rather than comparing it to the UK's current situation as an European Union member.

Irish sources are confident the solidarity shown by the EU27 since the referendum in June 2016 will be maintained.

A Brexit deal has been reached by negotiators in Brussels and will be the focus of a crunch Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

"Cabinet will have to decide within the next few weeks whether no-deal is to be its main planning scenario for exit", a United Kingdom official said.
