That will give Trump a partial claim of victory and allow him to continue his drive to reshape the federal courts. Trump, the GOP's chief messenger, warned that significant Democratic victories would trigger devastating consequences.

Manchin defeated Republican Patrick Morrisey, the state's attorney general.

Democrat Amy McGrath, a former Marine Corps fighter pilot, is running neck-and-neck against incumbent Republican Andy Barr in a House race in Kentucky, a state Trump won by 30 points.

In the hotly contested 2016 election, Trump proclaimed that he would ban Muslims from being granted admission to the United States as president.

Republicans now control 29 governorships to 21 for the Democrats.

In trying to stem Republican losses, Trump made only passing reference to his $1.5 trillion tax cut - the GOP Congress' signature achievement - and instead barnstormed through mostly white regions of the country, interjecting dark and foreboding warnings.

New Mexico's 2nd district is another key race: Susie Lee, a Democrat, is facing Republican Danny Tarkanian for the House seat held by Democrat Jacky Rosen, who is challenging Dean Heller, and Nevada's 4th district, where GOP candidate Cresent Hardy is facing off against Democrat Steven Horsford. IN is Trump country (and the home state of Vice President Mike Pence), but Donnelly is slightly ahead in most recent polls.

This means only a third of the Senate will be up for reelection during any elections.

A turbulent election season that tested President Donald Trump's slash-and-burn political style against the strength of the Democratic resistance comes to a close as Americans cast ballots in the first national election of the Trump era. As that number indicates, voter enthusiasm is high.

While the occupant of the White House is typically central to midterm elections, Trump has worked especially hard to make this one about him. AP VoteCast also showed a majority of voters considered Trump a factor in their votes.

Almost 40% of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to a national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Mr Trump.

The wild card in the 2018 U.S. House midterm elections is the spillover from President Trump's wildly successful 40-day barnstorming tour to pick up U.S. Senate Seats. On Monday, he blitzed through a trio of Midwest states he won in 2016 - Ohio, Indiana and Missouri - exhorting his supporters to help send Republicans to Capitol Hill to help safeguard his administration's accomplishments and a booming economy. Mr Trump is fighting hard for this seat and chose Missouri as the location for his final campaign rally. He was active on Twitter throughout much of the day, blasting out endorsements for Republican candidates and weighing in on the balloting.

Tom Mooney, a voter in the same district said he was casting his vote for the Republicans.

"Ever since President Trump has been in office, it has just been not the country that I am used to or that I thought I would be in", said Sarah Roth, 22, a Democratic voter from Minnetonka, Minnesota. The survey is separate from the traditional exit polls for the television networks.
