Liverpool boss Klopp unhappy with strikers in Red Star shock

Liverpool boss Klopp unhappy with strikers in Red Star shock

The home side made a fast start and deservedly picked up their first win in the pool courtesy of Milan Pavkov's first-half double.

Read Klopp's assessment of the game below...

If he held out any hope of winning over Liverpool supporters, Lazar Markovic has been going about it the wrong way. "The start was pretty intense it was clear, they wanted to strike back [after the 4-0 defeat at Anfield]", he added.

It was no more than Red Star deserved after the opening 20 minutes.

However one stat from last night's game is causing rage in a big section of the fanbase.

Politics will keep Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri from making the trip to face Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, almost five months after the Switzerland forward made a nationalist hand gesture while celebrating his winning goal against Serbia at the World Cup in June. That leaves them second in the group with tough fixtures against PSG and Napoli. You then have to play your best football in a negative mood. It was a blow, of course.

"It's one of those periods we need to get through", he said. At the end, you have to score goals. We had moments, we had kind of nearly-chances, the biggest in the last two three minutes and before that not enough.

The Guinean suffered a hamstring injury during the last global break and after he returned to training late last week, he is fit and ready to come back into Liverpool's starting lineup once more.

On how much the atmosphere influenced the game...

"We are keen to be respectful and keen to avoid any distractions that would take focus away from a 90-minute-plus contest that is important for football and only football". Whatever they sang, we don't understand. At half-time we walked a long way to the dressing room and they were all in a very positive mood. The visitors give possession away cheaply once more and they are in deep trouble now. For us, it was not clicking, it was not easy.

"Maybe it's not been as good to look at but we've been effective at it".

"They've really put themselves in a bad position in the group".

"We need to win our games, it's on our shoulders.it's in our hands but we will have to play better than we did tonight".

"You don't find solutions on the pitch, you solve problems".

We were not surprised.

"As players we've got to take responsibility", he said. "Last season everyone was used to us scoring four or five goals".

The English club have now lost both of their away games in the group stage, having been beaten 1-0 at Napoli last month.

On the performance of Pavkov...

It is not in Klopp's style to lose his temper straight after a match and he did not say anything to the squad before they boarded their late flight back to Merseyside; the German prefers to watch the replay of a game once, sometimes twice.

Red Star secured their first-ever Champions League group stage win after the towering striker's brace - the second of which was simply outstanding.
