Hundreds demonstrate to protect Russian Federation investigation

"We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States".

When Democrats assume control of House committees next year, they will direct everything from the subject matter of investigations to the timing and substance of committee hearings.

"Whitaker is much more loyal to Trump than he was to Sessions", veteran political scientist Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute told Newsmax.

Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein has also sent letters to top officials in the Trump administration demanding the preservation of all documents and materials related to the special counsel.

One of the exceptions, Senator Susan Collins, said non-interference in the Mueller probe was "imperative".

A Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, on Thursday called Mueller's investigation a "headache" for USA authorities but said it "has nothing to do with us", and he declined to comment on Sessions' departure.

The Washington protest is set to take place in front of the White House.

Democrats see this latest move as an attempt to do just that.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating potential collusion between Russian operatives and Trump associates during the 2016 presidential campaign and transition.

Con este panorama, el de una victoria a medias, no es claro para los analistas el camino que tomará el Partido Demócrata . Sin embargo, aún está en duda si estos elegirán ser un riesgo para Trump o buscarán la negociación.

Congressional Democrats have already called on Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the investigation.

Her words were echoed by Democratic party Senate leader Chuck Schumer, who added: "Clearly, the president has something to hide."

Trump's relationship with Sessions frayed just weeks into his tenure, when he stepped aside from the Russian Federation investigation.

Mr Sessions removed himself from the probe after Democrats accused him of failing to disclose contacts he had had with the Russian ambassador as a senior adviser to Mr Trump's campaign. "I have done so to the best of my ability, working to support the fundamental legal processes that are the foundation of justice", Sessions wrote in his resignation letter.

Mr Sessions resigned at the request of the president.

The department confirmed he would be assuming oversight of the Mueller probe from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The president can not directly fire the special counsel.

"(Whitaker) called it "Mueller's lynch mob" and he said the way to do it was to, in effect, deny funding, stifle it that way, or cut authority or disapprove indictments", Blumenthal said. In August 2017, he wrote a piece for CNN in which he stated that looking into Mr Trump's personal finances, or those of his family, "goes beyond the scope of the appointment of the special counsel".

Could the investigation be limited?

The recusal left the investigation in the hands of Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller two months later after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey.
