Australia outback: family found dead, child missing in Northern Territory

"We will continue a precautionary land and air search until we are satisfied that all areas of interest have been sufficiently canvassed", he said in a statement Thursday.

The bodies of a young couple. both aged 19, and their three-year-old son were found in the Northern Territory on Wednesday 4.5km away from their broken-down vehicle.

"Although police have no information that suggests there were other passengers in the auto, we will continue a precautionary land and air search until we are satisfied that all areas of interest have been sufficiently canvassed", Southern Desert Division Superintendent Jody Nobbs said.

The deaths were initially thought to have been caused by a auto crash - but that was quickly ruled out as the tragic reality of the situation became clear.

He added the dead had last been seen leaving the community of Willowra five days ago.

"Further enquiries indicate it is possible a 12-year-old boy was a passenger in the vehicle and was not among the three people found dead", police said.

It would turn out they would be discovered 4.5km from their abandoned vehicle, where remnants of food and water were found. Remnants of food and water were also found at the scene.

Family members have not authorised the release of the boy's name but say people living in the surrounding communities of Ali Curung, Ti Tree and Willowra are aware of his identity. "This is a tragic situation from a police perspective", Superintendent Jody Nobbs told a news conference Thursday.

First reports to police on Wednesday indicated the vehicle had crashed but investigators found that was not the case.

Authorities were alerted to the incident after a man raised the alarm at the Willowra Health Clinic just before 12.30pm on Wednesday. "He's quite distraught about what he's found", he said.

"This does serve unfortunately as a timely reminder for anybody traveling on the Northern Territory roads to ensure that, when you do travel, your vehicle is in a fit state to travel".

Police urged anyone with information about the child's whereabouts to contact them immediately.
