Pompeo meeting with North Korean envoy delayed

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday he hoped to meet again early next year with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un but insisted he was in "no rush" after top-level preparatory talks were abruptly postponed.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's meeting with his North Korean counterpart, scheduled for Thursday in NY, has been postponed, the State Department said Wednesday.

"Pompeo's meeting with officials from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, scheduled for this week in NY, will now take place at a later date", Nauert said.

During a press conference on Wednesday mostly focused on midterm US elections, Trump contended that he had made more progress with North Korea than past administrations, and said that with sanctions still in place, he was not in a hurry to reach a deal with Pyongyang, which has halted nuclear and missile tests for the past year.

The cancellation comes amid North Korean threats to restart its nuclear development unless the USA begins to remove sanctions - a step the administration says it will not take until North Korea meaningfully moves to denuclearize, which it so far has not done.

But the State Department said in a short statement on Wednesday that the officials would meet later "when our respective schedules permit".

"I would love to take the sanctions off, but they have to be responsive too".

Pyongyang has complained that Washington has not made concessions in return for the moves it has taken and last Friday warned it could resume development of its nuclear program if the United States did not drop its sanctions campaign.

But the Trump administration says that sanctions must remain as pressure until a final accord, rejecting an incremental approach favoured by ally South Korea.

Trump has cast his diplomacy with the elusive thirtysomething leader as evidence of his masterful deal-making.

It offered no reason and North Korea's propaganda services have not mentioned the meeting. Just a year ago, he was threatening "fire and fury" against North Korea.

He visited NY in May for talks with Pompeo in what was the highest-level trip by a North Korean to the United States in almost two decades.

"We made more progress in that four or five months (since the summit) than they have made in 70 years", he said, referring to previous United States leaders.

Meanwhile, Kim Song-hye at the North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland and Ri Jong-hyok, the deputy head of the rubberstamp Supreme People's Assembly, will visit South Korea next week for a seminar in Gyeonggi Province discussing peace in the region, according to the Unification Ministry.

Park Byung-kwang of the Institute for National Security Strategy in Seoul, said, "It appears to be an attempt to convey the North's thoughts and to gauge our stance at a time when progress in U.S".
