Boeing said that investigations by authorities in Indonesia where Lion Air flight 610 crashed last month had indicated problems with an "angle of attack" sensor.

Indonesian investigators said their flight procedure recommendations to Boeing were based on how the flight crew responded to problems on the Bali to Jakarta flight.

That angle-of-attack sensor is meant to measure the direction of air flow over wings so that they maintain lift.

The team from Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) said that they had arrived at the preliminary conclusions after sifting through details of the flight data recorder (FDR), or black box, which was found in the Java Sea, near Karawang, West Java, last week.

Soerjanto Tjahjono, chairman of the transport safety committee, said Wednesday that airspeed indicator malfunctions on the jet's last four flights, which were revealed by analysis of the flight data recorder, were intertwined with the sensor issue.

Aerospace giant Boeing is preparing to alert pilots of its new 737 Max line of passenger jets warning that inaccurate readings in an onboard flight-monitoring system can cause the planes "to abruptly dive", Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing a source with knowledge of the matter.

"The draft of what will be conveyed by Boeing this morning has been presented to us", said air accident investigator Nurcahyo Utomo.

The Lion Air jet that crashed reportedly had issues with its "angle of attack" sensors.

Airlines using the 737 MAX include the Singapore Airlines offshoot SilkAir, Garuda Indonesia and Canada's WestJet, but none had received a bulletin from Boeing.

While planes like the Max fly mostly on autopilot, pilots can fly manually if they're dealing with unusual situations like the malfunctions that occurred on the Lion Air flight.

Visitors watch as a Boeing 737 Max lands after an air display during the Farnborough Airshow, southwest of London, on July 16, 2018.

According to The Seattle Times' aerospace reporter, if the AoA sensor falsely indicates that the plane's nose is too high, the automatic system response is to "trim" the plane's horizontal tail to begin putting the nose down.

The confirmation of Flight 610's condition comes as divers continue to search for the aircraft's missing cockpit voice recorder (CVR), commonly known as a black box, which could help investigators piece together the plane's final moments before it crashed.

The FAA, which regulates the USA aviation industry, has not received any reports of airspeed issues with the model in the United States, said a person familiar with its reviews, who asked not to be named as he was not authorised to speak.

After an engine on a Southwest Airlines plane fractured earlier this year over Pennsylvania, killing a passenger, CFM International Inc. issued multiple bulletins to operators of its CFM56-7B power plants.

Service bulletins can be followed by airworthiness directives to airlines by the Federal Aviation Administration, giving the recommendations extra weight.

Boeing says in the bulletin that if this failure arises, "initially, higher control forces may be needed to overcome any nose-down stabilizer trim".

The incident which took place on October 29 resulted in the death of all 189 people on board.
