Harvick Warrants His Shot At NASCAR Cup Title With Victory In Texas

"We want to earn it", said Harvick, who led 177 of 337 laps. "Today we earned our way in, and we're going to race again next week (at Phoenix) and try to win another race and then see what we can do at Homestead".

After taking the inside on the first two restarts, and briefly losing the lead after the second one, Harvick opted to start from outside for the green-white-checkered finish.

"I think our team has been kind of that rock that sets the foundation at Stewart-Haas Racing", he said. "It all worked out".

If Harvick can hold on and win Sunday at the 1 1/2-mile track, he would lock in one of the four championship-contending spots for the season finale in two weeks.

He picked up six spots in the closing laps to claim his 20th top-10 of the season and his first finish of the year between 6th and 10th.

This time, there was no late-race glitch to interrupt Kevin Harvick's domination of a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race.

With Harvick and Martinsville victor Joey Logano in the No. 22 Ford of Team Penske locked in, the series goes to Phoenix next week with only two spots up for grabs for the championship run at Homestead.

Martin Truex Jr. has promised that Joey Logano won't win the NASCAR Cup title. Truex is 25 points ahead of Kurt Busch, who likely will need a victory at Phoenix to advance to the Championship 4. Kyle Busch and Martin Trueex Jr now hold the final two spots, but with Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott, Aric Almirola and Clint Bowyer hot on their tail the race at ISM Raceway in Phoenix could be very exciting.

Logano is the only driver locked into the final four spots, clinching that after his bump-and-run on the final lap to beat Truex last week at Martinsville.

Kyle Busch was 17th and Bowyer 26th after starting on the front row but making contact with Denny Hamlin on the first lap. Harvick was already starting to rebuild his lead - it had been almost 4 seconds before the caution - when another yellow flag came out.

"We got a little bit of luck on our side after that to be able to get back on the lead lap", Truex told reporters. On the previous restart on Lap 311 of a scheduled 334, following caution for Matt DiBenedetto's hard crash into the inside wall on the backstretch, Harvick picked the inside lane, and Blaney cleared him off Turn 2.

NASCAR says it erred in sending Jimmie Johnson's No. 48 vehicle to back of the field for the start of the race in Texas. If I sailed off in there as fast as he did, I would have got loose, wrecked us both.

The success is even more impressive when you consider the changes that have taken place at SHR during his tenure, including different teammates and the organization's move from the Chevrolet to Ford camp last season. "He motored around me".

Truex, second at the time, finished last in the 37-car field.

A caution with 38 laps to go created an interesting kink in the pit strategy of many who debated whether or not to pit for tires and fuel, that being the looming question mark throughout Sunday's race.

"Luckily we were able to get up front and get some stage points in the first two stages (Sunday) and then we had trouble, but we had it at least in time to recover", Truex said.
