BBC criticised over Arron Banks appearing on Andrew Marr Show

"The interview is an invitation to viewers to choose between what the independent regulator has said and what Arron Banks says".

'The money came from Rock Services which was a United Kingdom limited company, it was generated out of insurance business written in the UK.

Pressed on The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One about the source of the money, he said: "The money came from Rock Services, which was..."

It said that, as well as having reasonable grounds to suspect he was not the true source of the cash, loans involved a company, Rock Holdings, based on the Isle of Man, which was impermissible under the rules.

Reuters reported that Banks stated he had received no foreign money, no Russian money and that he was a United Kingdom taxpayer.

Responding to the decision to refer Banks to police, Liberal Democrat lawmaker, Tom Brake, who speaks for his party on Brexit said "people have known for a long time that the Brexiter ranks were filled with dodgy demagogues, today's news will be little surprise".

This would have made it an "impermissible" source of money under United Kingdom electoral law.

"It is a discrepancy because what he told us was that Rock Services really just provides services to other companies that he owns - provides cash, makes payments. No matter how many times he was asked that question, he didn't answer it".

Mr Banks has been accused of misleading Parliament over links between Leave.EU and his insurance businesses.

The "unprecedented" involvement of the NCA in the case was an important step because the agency was able to examine all financial records of Banks's businesses, including in areas outside United Kingdom jurisdiction such as the Isle of Man, said Mr Collins.

Richard Tice of Leave Means Leave told BBC Newsnight that "Remoaners" were using the investigation as an excuse to try and overturn Brexit.

"I am confident that a full and frank investigation will finally put an end to the ludicrous allegations leveled against me and my colleagues", Banks said.

"There are two issues here".

The idea that Russia could be connected to Leave.EU's funding was not mentioned by the Electoral Commission or the NCA, but reports in the Observer have suggested Banks met Russian officials "multiple times" before the Brexit vote.

The Electoral Commission's review of referendum finances focused on £2m reported to have been loaned to Better for the Country by Banks and his insurance companies and a £6m donation he made alone.

Funding provided in late 2015 and early 2016 was diverted to two main groups Leave.EU and Better for the Country Limited [BFTC].
