Texas couple dies in helicopter crash moments after their wedding

Lawrence, according to an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), was 76 years old and an experienced pilot with 24,000 hours of flying under his belt.

The Uvalde County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook page that the office received a call around midnight about the crash.

"I'm absolutely devastated!" wrote one friend on Facebook, adding that the pilot of the aircraft was also killed.

Byler's grandfather, William Byler, said the couple died when a helicopter that had departed the wedding reception crashed.

When rescuers arrived, family members who had reached the site in a private helicopter were already there, she said.

Wedding guests posted videos online of the doomed helicopter appearing to take off safely from the Byler ranch as friends and family cheered.

Mr Byler was an agriculture engineering senior and his wife was an agricultural communication senior, the paper said.

The Sam Houston State University seniors were on the way to their honeymoon in San Antonio when their helicopter crashed into the mountain, game warden Rachel Kellner with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said. She said that Ackerman "could light up a room with her smile".

"We ask that you keep the Byler and Ackerman families in your thoughts and prayers".

She said that both of them enjoyed spending time with family.

Pal Katie Ellis told the Express-News newspaper that Ackerman was to graduate in December and Byler in May. "Will was so adventurous and lived life to the fulled every single day and Bailee always went with the flow".

DPS and the Federal Aviation Administration continue to investigate the scene.
