Margin For Error Among Midterm Elections Polls Suddenly Explodes

Given the stakes for his presidency, he might as well be.

After two years of wielding no practical political power in Washington, the Democratic Party faces a strong chance of winning control of the US House of Representatives in next week's election, with Republicans likely to keep the Senate.

A White House that has struggled to stay on course under favourable circumstances would be tested in dramatic ways.

"House forecast: Democrats will win 226 seats (and the House majority) while Republicans will win just 209 seats".

"I look forward to seeing what happens, because something is going on", the president said in Cleveland.

White House aides insist the president doesn't spend much time contemplating defeat, but he has begun to try to calibrate expectations.

On the eve of the election, Republicans edging ahead of Democrats by one point in a generic congressional ballot survey conducted by Rasmussen Reports, the polling company that came closest to predicting the outcome of the 2016 election.

Sally Persons says the President would consider this a validation of his victory in 2016 as well as his agenda for the past two years. He told the AP last month that he won't bear any responsibility should Democrats take over.

"We are not only going to hold the majority, we're going to add to it", said Sen. That figure in 2014 was just 27.5 million.

Recent polling shows the Democrats have a good chance of taking control of the House.

"If they take back the House, he essentially will become a lame-duck president, and he won't win re-election", said Amy Kremer, a tea party activist who leads the group Women for Trump. Other committees are plotting aggressive oversight of Trump's administration and his web of business interests.

Control of the House comes with subpoena power and the ability to use it to get his returns and potentially make them public.

Republicans are favoured to retain their slight majority in the U.S. Senate, now at two seats, which would let them retain the power to approve U.S. Supreme Court and other judicial nominations on straight party-line votes. First among them would be a potentially bitter leadership fight in the House to replace retiring Speaker Paul Ryan.

"The major issues for voters are healthcare, immigration, and trade policy".

He said "a lot of things can happen" if the two parties could find a way to work together.

But if the Democrats wrest control of one or both chambers, they could stymie or even reverse Mr Trump's plans. Their left-wing activist base will demand they move quickly to impeach the president. He'd have to compromise with Democrats to get any legislation across the line.

"Rather the question is: if there is a real blue wave in the House, will there be enough pro-free trade Democrats to join the Republican minority to overcome the traditional anti-trade Democrats and others who simply do not wish to give Trump a victory", Kergin, now a senior advisor at Bennett Jones LLP, told BNN Bloomberg in an email.

They have seven open congressional seats to fill, the most in decades. From stoking fears about illegal immigration to warning of economic collapse if Democrats are victorious.

In cramped aircraft hangars and pack arenas across battleground states, Trump has boasted about the energetic displays of support from his most loyal backers, drawing parallels to his own White House bid.

In the final stretch, Trump has ramped up his hard-line rhetoric on immigration and cultural issues, including warnings about a caravan of migrants headed to the border with Mexico and "liberal" mobs, and touted a growing USA economy that he said would be threatened by Democrats.

"Trump is helping. He's becoming more and more radioactive", Manley said. "They know that to win re-election they've got to win Florida and OH".

"The midterm elections used to be, like, boring, right?" the president asked supporters. Those voters have increasingly fled Trump's Republican Party, turned off by his chaotic leadership style and xenophobic rhetoric.

But at the IN rally, the president relished IN making Democrats go nuts and said he's not yet ready to tone it down.

"These are corrupt people", the president said.
