Not Exercising Is Worse for Your Health Than Smoking, Says Study

And while the life-saving effects of exercise did start to taper off, with elite athletes only being slightly more death-proof than merely highly active people, the researchers found there was "no observed upper limit of benefit".

The risk associated with poor cardiorespiratory fitness was compared to or even exceeded traditional risk factors, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and smoking, according to the study.

What researchers found was an inverse association between cardiorespiratory health and mortality risk, in that the people with the highest cardiorespiratory or aerobic fitness had the lowest mortality risk, with benefits being especially seen among the older participants and those with hypertension. Cleveland Clinic has pioneered many medical breakthroughs, including coronary artery bypass surgery and the first face transplant in the United States.

Where previous research suggested that overdoing it can increase the risk of death, this study claims that this is not the case - to the point that the senior author of the paper said that there is "no level of exercise or fitness that exposes you to risk".

"Cardiorespiratory fitness is a modifiable indicator of long-term mortality, and health care professionals should encourage patients to achieve and maintain high levels of fitness", said the researchers. "We can see from the study that the ultra-fit still have lower mortality". As benefits were seen across all ages and sexes in this study.

WWE Star Roman Reigns Reveals He Is Battling Leukemia
This was an absolutely shocking announcement and obviously I join everyone in wishing him the very best with this battle. He said this is not a retirement but after he's done "whooping leukemia's ass once again, I'm coming back home".

It is important to note that the study analyzed findings over a large population, and individual patients should always check with their healthcare provider before starting an exercise program.

"People who do not perform very well on a treadmill test", Jaber said, "have nearly double the risk of people with kidney failure on dialysis".

"If you compare the risk of sitting versus the highest performing on the exercise test, the risk is about three times higher than smoking", Jaber explained.

In fact, they found that those who were unfit in the treadmill had worse prognosis in regard to death risk compared to smokers, those who are hypertensive, or those who have diabetes.

Meanwhile, those that didn't do well on the treadmill test were said to have nearly two times the health risks as those with kidney failure on dialysis. However, this study demonstrated that there is no limit to the benefits provided by exercise. Doctors need to give patients prescriptions for exercise, the body needs to move, run, and walk; it's all about getting up and moving.
