Protesters shine torches on Sydney Opera House to disrupt advert

The draw for the race, being held at Royal Randwick this Saturday, was held in confidence by Racing NSW stewards and kept under wraps until the results were revealed as part of the light show.

When the sails were lit up at 7.39pm, the crowd let out an enormous boo and screamed "shame on you", "our house not for sale" and "turn it off" during the 20-minute illumination.

Controversy continues to plague The Everest horse race, with Racing NSW now suspending all bets on the event - billed as the "world's richest race on turf" - until this evening citing "security risks".

In a letter to the premier on Tuesday, the NSW Heritage Council said it was extremely disappointed with the government's decision and described the projection as "inappropriate". He cut her off immediately as she attempted to explain the heritage listing of the Opera House and then said he would be calling the Premier.

Activist group Sleeping Giants Oz is targeting Alan Jones advertisers, accusing the 2GB host of bullying Opera House CEO Louise Herron into allowing advertising to be projected onto the iconic landmark. Jones' response to Herron arguing the Opera House is "not a billboard" was: "Who said?"

Mr Quint said the legal exemptions allowing projection onto the sails made clear that they must be "non-commercial occasions of brief duration".

State and federal politicians have weighed in on the stoush, including Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who believed the promotion of the event was a "no-brainer".
