Coun Brian Ford, Cabinet Member for Adults, said: "Mental health is something which affects each and every one of us so it is important we take positive steps to look after it and support others".

A CAMPAIGN to promote mental wellbeing will be rolled out tomorrow to support World Mental Health Day. "Yet despite the universality of the issue, we struggle to talk about it openly or to offer adequate care or resources".

With teenagers and young adults the focus of World Mental Health Day on October 10, PsychMG chairperson, Dr Sebolelo Seape, said the prevention of teen suicides starts with better understanding of the symptoms of depression. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries. Investment by governments and the involvement of the social, health and education sectors in comprehensive, integrated, evidence-based programmes for the mental health of young people is essential.

Tomorrow, October 10, is Mental Health Day - a day recognised by the World Health Organisation. Parents and teachers can help build life skills of children and adolescents to help them cope with everyday challenges at home and at school.

"In a ideal world, getting treatment for mental health challenges would be no different than getting medical treatment for a skin rash or a bad cold or a broken leg", LaPolt said.
