Basilashvili wins China Open final

Nikoloz Basilashvili booked a China Open final meeting with Juan Martin del Potro courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Kyle Edmund on Saturday. "That is the game I need to go far in this tournament".

Basilashvili raced into a 3-0 lead at the start of the second set and, although he was broken when serving for the match at 5-3, hit back immediately to seal victory and a meeting with 22-time Tour victor Del Potro. "I'm playing very good". The Italian injured his leg against Marton Fucsovics in the final stages of the quarter-final match and he was unable to play today or the next week in Shanghai.

A loose forehand cost Basilashvili the win and things became serious when he suffered a break in the following game while serving for the match.

Del Potro was not moving fluidly throughout and he ceded a break quickly to fall 1-2 behind to the world No 34.

Ballon d'Or: Gareth Bale among first five nominees to be announced
Cristiano Ronaldo is in contention to retain the Ballon d'Or for the third successive year after being named on the 30-man shortlist.

Matters came to a head in a pulsating eighth game, when del Potro failed to convert three break points that would likely have shifted momentum the Argentinian's way. Basilashvili broke serve to 15 in the following game and, after saving two break points in a tense 10th game, converted his third championship point with a driven backhand volley.

"It's going to be a hard one", Del Potro, who has a 1-1 win-loss record against Fognini, added. "I think he deserves to win because I couldn't play at my best level".

For the victory in Beijing, the Georgians will get 500 ranking points and 733 thousands of dollars in prize money.
