But next year's presidential race appears to have tightened in recent months with the APC hit by a wave of defections over Buhari's leadership style.

One of the 13 aspirants jostling for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential ticket, Tanimu Turaki, has asked PDP delegates to vote for the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, if, for whatever reasons, they rejected him.

He joined the ruling APC and sought the party's ticket in 2014, but lost to Gen Buhari at the primary held in Lagos.

All eyes are now on the dozen candidates vying to be nominated to challenge him from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the former ruling party.

"I can not do it alone", Mr Abubakar said in his acceptance speech.
