Cleveland Browns trade wide receiver Josh Gordon to New England Patriots

Cleveland Browns trade wide receiver Josh Gordon to New England Patriots

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the New England Patriots are "close" to a deal for the talented but troubled receiver. The event was not sponsored by the team but was for a line of products, possibly clothing, that the wide receiver was endorsing, the source said.

The Browns announced Saturday that they would release Gordon on Monday, reportedly due to the loss of trust.

The Patriots are sending a conditional fifth-round draft choice to the Browns for Gordon.

In the six years since Gordon was taken in the second round of the supplemental draft he has played in just 41 games.

Rather than outright releasing Gordon, the Browns are now trying to trade him to get something in return.

The Patriots and Browns confirmed the trade but did not announce terms of the deal.

Gordon spent most of training camp away from the team while tending to personal matters. That injury reportedly had been suffered at a promotional appearance.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon sprints up the field after catching a pass during Wednesday's practice for this weekend's regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. He has recorded 127 receptions for 1,755 yards and 10 touchdowns. Gordon's 2013 campaign was the stuff of legend, hauling in 87 catches for 1,646 yards (nine touchdowns), playing alongside a number of mediocre-at-best quarterbacks.

The 27-year old was reinstated last year after missing the 2015 and 2016 seasons because of suspensions related to violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Gordon has shown the ability to be one of the best wide receivers in the league when he's right physically and mentally.
