Hurricane Florence Drowned a Riverfront 30 Miles from the North Carolina Coast

Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, N.C., at 7:15 a.m. ET, creeping slowly ashore - but bringing strong winds, a massive storm surge and a rain system that will soak much of the state and SC for days.

"We've rescued over 100 people in New Bern, NC; people from Jacksonville, NC, had to be rescued from a hotel", Cooper said, describing efforts to save residents north of Wilmington, where high floods have already hit.

Forecasters say "it can not be emphasized enough that the most serious hazard associated with slow-moving Florence is extremely heavy rainfall, which will cause disastrous flooding that will be spreading inland".

"I'm hearing all this talk about how this is a rain event and the storm is weakening".

Cooper said Florence would "continue its violent grind across the state for days".

Hurricane Florence has reached the USA mainland and is bringing intense conditions throughout the Carolinas.

Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m.at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line, coming ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline.

In its 1200 GMT advisory, the center said Florence was packing winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph) and moving northwest at six miles per hour (10 kilometers per hour).

The outer bands of wind and rain caused by the storm were already lashing North Carolina on Thursday morning.

Issac is expected to slowly drift through the eastern and central Caribbean waters through the weekend, not too far from Jamaica, but won't be much of a threat.

Helping with rescues there were members of the so-called Cajun Navy, a group of Louisiana-based volunteers who became famous during last year's Hurricane Harvey, locals said on Twitter.

Mix-messages on next round of talks on US-China trade war
A trade war with China would be like throwing a match into a barrel of petrol for the stock market right now. But those talks also broke down. "If China does not make concessions now, it will be bad", he said.

The U.S. military says a massive relief effort is ready to sweep into affected areas to deliver food and water, conduct search and rescue missions, as well as provide medical care and restore power.

5 a.m.: The latest update from the National Hurricane Center shows little change to Florence's path or strength.

Screaming winds bent trees and raindrops flew sideways as Florence's leading edge battered the Carolina coast Thursday. He said all roads leading to his neighborhood were blocked by fallen trees.

"Afterwards, I'm going to drink a bottle of whiskey and take a two-day nap, but right now I'm walking the neighborhood and making sure my neighbors are fine, because nobody can get in here".

As Hurricane Florence unleashes a deluge upon North Carolina, the city of New Bern has found itself inundated with floodwater, forcing hundreds of residents to call for help.

As of 1 p.m. ET, the storm's sustained winds dropped to 75 miles per hour as it wobbled west-southwestward near the coast, delaying its expected move inland, the National Hurricane Center said.

And as the storm pushes inland, it could dump 6-10 inches as far inland as Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina as well as in Roanoke, Virginia, he said.

It was expected to begin pushing its way westward across SC later in the day, in a watery siege that could go on all weekend.

As of Friday morning, there were upwards of 20,000 people in 157 shelters across the state of North Carolina, and that number will only continue to climb as rescue efforts are now underway.
