UEFA Nations League Roundup: Spain humiliate Croatia with thumping win

UEFA Nations League Roundup: Spain humiliate Croatia with thumping win

Spain started the second half with the same intensity as they had in the first half, and it didn't take them long to score.

Luka Modric's Croatia threatened early in the southeastern Spanish city of Elche, but Spain took control of the match by scoring three goals in 11 first-half minutes.

However, it was a lot more one-sided than most people envisaged as Spain dismantled the World Cup finalists in Elche.

After their 2-1 defeat of England on Saturday, Spain will measure up against World Cup runners-up Croatia. However, it is the biggest defeat in Croatia's history, so it was a dismal day for them.

That counted as one of four assists for Asensio on the night, with a more conventional one coming four minutes after the restart when he released Rodrigo who nutmegged Kalinic for his fourth goal in six starts for his country.

"It would be very easy to say that this is my Spain, generating many chances and conceding few goals, but the truth is that I am changing things very fast", Luis Enrique said.

Croatia's Ivan Santini was guilty of missing early on but once Spain pulled ahead, the visitors crumbled.

Lovren was fantastic alongside Vida at the World Cup, and earned his place in the official team of the tournament.

Zlatko Dalic cut a furious figure on the touchline, and his mood darkened just four minutes after the restart, when Rodrigo beat the offside trap to latch onto a pass from Asensio and slot between Kalinic's legs.

Luis Enrique couldn't have asked for a much better start as coach of Spain's national team.

Marco Asensio was on a mad one last night versus Croatia.

Spain have rattled in the goals against Croatia to take charge of their Nations League group.

Rodrigo - who scored the victor at Wembley - beat the offside trap before finishing neatly, Ramos headed in from a corner and Isco turned sharply before firing in from inside the box.

In June, Asensio actually commented directly on interest from Liverpool, saying: "When the World Cup is over, we'll talk about that sort of thing, now I'm focused on selection [for Spain]".
