Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum wins democratic nomination in Florida gubernatorial race upset

If elected, Gillum would be the first black governor of Florida. "We have to give our voters something to vote for, not against". Putnam is the candidate of the state's Republican establishment. An advocate for the impeachment of Donald Trump, Gillum's win is a massive victory for the liberal wing of the Democratic party.

From the beginning of the campaign, he visited African-American churches.

On Wednesday, an MSNBC panel slammed Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) after he told voters that they would "monkey this up" if they elected his opponent, progressive Andrew Gillum, to be governor of the state instead of him.

But a Fox News anchor later stated, "We do not condone this language".

Trump has lavishly praised DeSantis, one of his most reliable TV defenders, and slammed Gillum as "a failed Socialist Mayor". Former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine poured $29 million of his personal wealth into the race and saturated the state with 30 different campaign ads. Sanders campaigned for Gillum at rallies in Tampa and Orlando earlier this month.

"Andrew Gillum has a very engaging personality and he is very clear and strong about his beliefs", said Christopher Daniels, professor of political science at Famu. He also outright endorsed Gillum.

Gillum ultimately won by 34.2 percent of the vote, with former Congresswoman Gwen Graham narrowly behind at 31.4 percent of the vote.

Gillum, by contrast, made no apologies for his support for full legalization, which he included as part of a wider criminal justice plan to end the mass incarceration crisis in Florida.

"I have been really slow to try to think on it because it's too big", he said. "He went on a bus tour in the last week, and he reached out to communities that don't usually hear from candidates". Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the unsuccessful candidate for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.

State Rep. Kamia Brown, D-Ocoee, was one of the first lawmakers to endorse Gillum in July 2017.

"There is not a profit margin in the state of Florida that ought to be able to rob us of those elements: clean water, clean air, good oceans", Gillum said. His campaign has been pushing the message of a late "surge" in recent weeks, but most public polling had him behind the top tier candidates. "We have spent four [million]", Gillum told supporters at an event on Saturday.

But Democratic groups quickly accused DeSantis of using racist dog whistles, which DeSantis' campaign denied. Democrat Stacey Abrams won the party's nomination in Georgia in May.

"I'm going to stay true, I'm going to stay true to my values", Gillum said.

The 55-year-old's primary rivals have poked holes in her congressional voting record and criticized her for being too conservative and not progressive enough to be the Democratic nominee. He had become one of the most powerful Republicans in Congress before deciding to run for agriculture commissioner. Her challenge now is to unify the GOP base behind her, especially those aligned with Trump and who did not support McCain's frequent criticism of him, while also reaching out to voters in the political center.
