Knesset Health Committee Schedules Emergency Session on West Nile Virus

Public Health officials are concerned about widespread West Nile Virus activity throughout the area and are urging residents of all ages to take the necessary steps to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes.

One person in Ventura County has contracted West Nile virus, health officials said August 9.

"So, the type of mosquitoes that we are concerned about with West Nile are the Culex mosquitoes", said Andy Tyler, Regional Epidemiologist, Mesa County Public Health Department. Again, no human cases have been identified.

Earlier this month, mosquitoes were tested in the territory around Belgrade and 47 locations with mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were found. However, according to the Center for Disease Control about one in five people who are infected will develop a fever and one in 150 people will develop a serious, and potentially fatal illness. Most of the time, it's not a problem as most people with the infection won't experience symptoms.

Fight the bite: Wear long sleeves, long trousers, shoes and socks.

Apply Insect Repellent when you go outdoors. Make sure your doors and windows have tightly fitting screens.

The hot and muggy weather is creating optimal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

¯ Avoid outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Cover up your exposed skin with long trousers and long sleeves. Contact SCMAC to report standing water in ditches, flooded yards, fields, or similar locations that may produce mosquitoes.

¯ Tuck pant bottoms into sock tops to keep mosquitoes from getting under clothing. Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use. Owners should also speak with their veterinarian about mosquito repellents approved for use in animals and vaccinations to prevent WNV and EEE. In rare cases West Nile may cause encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain.
