Orca spotted without dead calf after 17 days

The Center for Whale Research says the killer whale, known as J35, was spotted without her baby while she "vigorously chased a school of salmon" for about a kilometre over the weekend.

"Her tour of grief is now over and her behavior is remarkably frisky".

"J35 frolicked past my window today with other J pod whales, and she looks vigorous and healthy", Balcomb wrote in an email.

The calf died soon after birth in July, and the orca mom had carried the body for almost three weeks while traveling hundreds of miles.

"Telephoto digital images taken from shore show that this mother whale appears to be in good physical condition", CWR said in a statement on Saturday.

"Killer whales and dolphins have been known to support and transport their dead calves for as long as a week - a testament to the amazingly strong mother/offspring bond and caring", said the centre.

The center said she had been seen briefly two days before without the calf, but the sighting Saturday was confirmation that her "tour of grief" was at an end. "The carcass has probably sunk to the bottom of these inland marine waters of the Salish Sea, and researchers may not get a chance to examine it for necropsy".

J35 was spotted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada while they were searching for another of the 75 southern resident killer whales, labelled an endangered species in both Canada and the United States.
