Saudi Arabia reportedly directing selloff of Canadian assets after criticism

The relationship between Canada and the United States isn't as good as one would hope, the Prime Minister triggered President Trump by trying to talk behind his back at the G7, which wasn't a good idea on Trudeau's part, all this led to a blank NAFTA deal and Tariffs on Canada by the US.

"Canada will always speak strongly and clearly in private and in public on questions of human rights", he said.

On Friday, Canada expressed concern over the arrests of activists in Saudi Arabia, including prominent women's rights campaigner Samar Badawi.

Trudeau said Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland had a long conversation with her Saudi counterpart on Tuesday and Canada is engaging directly with the Saudi government in a bid to restore diplomatic ties between the two countries. Her brother, blogger Raif Badawi, has been in prison since 2012 for criticizing the government, but his wife and children live in Quebec and became Canadian citizens earlier this year.

"The Canadian statement is a blatant interference in the Kingdom's domestic affairs, against basic global norms and all worldwide protocols".

"Memorial is doing what it can to support all Saudi students as we await clear directions from the Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau, the branch of the Saudi government that supports Saudi students in Canada", Sorensen said.

"But we will continue underscoring challenges where and when they exist, in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere", he continued.

The intensity of Saudi Arabia's response has puzzled many, who say it is an extreme reaction to a relatively tame tweet that isn't much different from what Canada has said before.

The Saudi foreign ministry has also ordered Canada's ambassador, Dennis Horak, to leave the country.

Jubeir added that Saudi Arabia was "considering additional measures" against Canada, without elaborating. Freeland said the embassy in Saudi Arabia is still in place and providing services to Canadians.

Another source said Canada would also seek help from Britain.
