CVS pharmacist fired for refusing to fill hormone prescription for trans woman

CVS is apologizing for the actions of a pharmacists here in the Valley who refused to fill a hormone prescription for a transgender woman that pharmacists was sacked.

Hilde Hall, who detailed the incident in a blog post published on ACLU's website on Thursday, said she was elated after she received her first prescription for hormone therapy from the doctor.

She says she left a complaint with a CVS corporate office several times.

"I was finally going to start seeing my body reflect my gender identity and the woman I've always known myself to be", she said.

She said the pharmacist also refused to give back her prescription note, meaning she couldn't get it filled at another pharmacy.

"He did not give me a clear reason for the refusal. He just kept asking, loudly and in front of other CVS staff and customers, why I was given the prescriptions", Hall recalls.

Hall says a pharmacist in the Phoenix suburb of Fountain Hills made her feel humiliated last April.

Steve Kilar, a spokesman for the civil liberties union in Arizona, said Hall had filed a complaint with the organization in May after she was having trouble getting a response from CVS.

The company apologized on social media Friday saying the pharmacist is no longer an employee.

"We also apologize for not appropriately following up on Ms. Hall's original complaint to CVS, which was due to an unintentional oversight, " the company added in its statement.

The employee's conduct "does not reflect our values or our commitment to inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care", CVS said.

It was the second recent controversial incident to take place in a Phoenix-area pharmacy.

After departing the store, Hall called the CVS customer service line twice to no avail, she said.

A transgender woman in Arizona was refused her hormone treatment medication by a CVS pharmacist. Hall said a local Walgreens eventually filled the prescription.

Arizona is one of six states that allow pharmacies and pharmacists to refuse to fill some medications - usually those related to emergency contraception - on religious or moral grounds.

I transferred all of my prescriptions there so that I never again have to see the pharmacist who discriminated against me.

Arteaga's doctor had ordered the drugs to terminate a pregnancy that she wanted very much after the fetus was found without a heartbeat. After years of working to affirm my identity in a world where transgender people are questioned constantly about how well they know themselves, the pharmacist refused to fill one of the prescriptions needed to affirm my identity.

It was unclear late Thursday whether CVS has a similar policy.

Hall said she called her doctor when she got home explaining the situation.
