Sebastian Vettel on pole following Lewis Hamilton disaster

Despite dealing Lewis Hamilton a significant blow in qualifying for the German Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel is sympathetic towards his championship rival for the auto issue he encountered.

Hamilton and Mercedes have managed to become the most dominant combo since Formula 1 switched to hybrid power in 2014.

The reigning world champion had initially tried to push his vehicle back to the pit-lane after the issue.

Vandoorne's profile is very similar to that of Jolyon Palmer and he was released by his Renault team prematurely at the end of the 2017 season with four races remaining.

Shortly after he had spoken to the print media at Hockenheim, Hamilton made several posts to Instagram, including one which quoted former South African president Nelson Mandela. "I enjoy working with the team, and also being teammates with Lewis - we have a good relationship, honest and straightforward, and always aiming to get the right results for Mercedes". Those big bumps did zero damage.

"Why didn't I pull over when asked". Honestly when I got out of the auto, it was painful, and the first thought in my mind was to try and get the vehicle back to the garage at all costs, so get out and push it if you have to, that's just me wanting to finish.

"I'll give everything tomorrow to see how high I can get up, but its not going to be like Silverstone". So I jumped out and I was trying to push it back, but there was so far to go. I can't control what's just happened.

"To those who take joy in seeing other people fail or suffer, I feel for you". "This year, with a full winter of preparation, I have been able to make a good step forward - and I believe that there is still more to come".

"Nelson Madela [sic] once said, We were not born with hate in our hearts, it's something learnt over time". That's why he's loved so much by so many, and that's why he's a great character in the field.

"I think today is definitely one of the best moments". "I will focus on getting that one position back, and the race start could be the best option".

Mercedes' announcement comes ahead of the team's home race in Germany, with Hamilton trailing Sebastian Vettel in the championship by eight points.

The Scuderia Ferrari driver and current Championship leader ended fourth fastest in both the morning and afternoon sessions around the Hockenheimring circuit, ending 0.271 seconds off the pace setting time of Daniel Riccardo in FP1 before closing FP2 0.225 seconds off Max Verstappen.
