President Trump, Russian President Putin Hold Joint News Conference Following Summit

"I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression", tweeted Sen.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday voiced their satisfaction with their first one-on-one meeting here, though acknowledged problems remain.

If anyone is "the enemy of the people", it is Trump himself. Not only did President Trump fail to speak the truth about an adversary; but speaking for America to the world, our president failed to defend all that makes us who we are - a republic of free people dedicated to the cause of liberty at home and overseas. "The summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake".

But at the news conference, Trump made no mention of the Novichok incident.

But Trump downplayed the notion that there was much to be gained by pressing Putin on the issue, noting the Russian president had repeatedly denied Kremlin involvement.

Think of how extraordinary - how unprecedented - that moment was.

Pushed on why people should believe his rebuttal, Mr Putin demanded that those making the claim - which have included the U.S. intelligence community - provide proof. Undeterred, the American president is set to go face-to-face with Putin, the authoritarian leader for whom he has expressed admiration. Trump leaned forward in his chair, his hands tented in front of him and frequently glanced over at the Russian president. Not only were Trump's comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin.

Trump's 2013 trip to Moscow is only the tip of a Titanic-size iceberg.

The Russian foreign ministry "liked" his words and tweeted back: "We agree".

Trump also congratulated Putin on hosting the World Cup, calling it "one of the best ever".

The speculation, while hardly conclusive, is entirely reasonable.

But perhaps the harshest critique came from a member of Trump's own party, Republican Senator John McCain, who said in a statement: "Today's press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory".

Every week lends further credence to that disturbing hypothesis.

Standing alongside the man accused of coordinating an interference campaign in the election, Mr Trump defended Mr Putin and called the probe headed up by former Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller a "disaster".

In the last seven days Trump has rattled NATO's cage, demanding they increase defence funding generously and immediately.

Additionally, Putin stressed that both militaries must work together to crush extremists in southwestern Syria, in part to help ensure Israel's security, something that Putin pointed out was important to Trump. I don't see any reason why it would be, ' Trump said, speaking to reporters about Russian election meddling as he stood side-by-side with the man USA intelligence says ordered it. "But I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today", Trump said. "I really think the world wants to see us get along".

We are past the point when such statements can be dismissed as naivete - especially when Trump has previously admitted that Russian Federation did hack the election.

In tweets Monday, Trump continued to undermine the investigation and blamed his predecessor, Barack Obama, for failing to stop Russia's efforts to sway the 2016 election in Trump's favor.

We are past the point where Trump's conduct can be ascribed to his general sympathy for dictators.

The only cause of discord he could name was the USA investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election. Trump seemed to return the favor by waiting until Putin had arrived at the palace before leaving his hotel.

- Trump said Putin "has an interesting idea" about what to do about the election attack, but he didn't offer details.
