Thailand cave rescuer may sue Elon Musk for calling him a pedophile

Musk was apparently upset that his proposal to use a miniature submarine in the rescue efforts was scrapped.

Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, the CEO of several high-profile American companies, broadcast to his 22 million social media followers on Sunday an unfounded and disparaging claim about an expert caver who criticized a miniature submarine he made.

Musk posted the baseless accusation shortly after.

If not, a summary of man and cave follows.

Musk, who grew increasingly frustrated during an earnings call in May, began to lash out at some of the people present in the call.

Musk said he would start a website to "track the credibility score of each journalist, editor & publication".

Hours later, a dive team sans submarine began extracting the children - ultimately successfully.

Musk's Twitter tantrum comes shortly after it was revealed Saturday that the self-described socialist donated almost $40,000 to a conservative political action committee focused on cementing the Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

Representatives of T. Rowe Price, Fidelity Investments and Baillie Gifford - Tesla's three largest shareholders, behind Musk himself - also declined to comment.

He had not had contact with Musk throughout the rescue operation nor since - a situation he hopes will not change.

"The caver told AFP he would make a decision when he flies back to the United Kingdom this week, but said the episode with Musk 'ain't finished, '" the news agency reported. "It had absolutely no chance of working". "He had no conception of what the cave passage was like,"said Unsworth".

Like other critics, Unsworth noted that the flooded tunnel was extremely narrow and twisted. Rigid", he said. "So it wouldn't have gone around corners or around any obstacles. At the time, Unsworth hadn't yet read Musk's tweets but had been told about them.

The interview spread through the weekend - until a Twitter user baited Musk into responding to it, just as he had been lured by another fan into devising his submarine.

He then reportedly went after Unsworth, calling him a "pedo" in a now deleted tweet. He wrote that he was escorted into the cave by Thai Navy Seals - "total opposite of wanting us to leave".

Unsworth's comments came as it was reported that two Australians who assisted in the global effort to help the Thai football team were given diplomatic immunity in case anything went wrong during the rescue. He bragged that he would one day pilot it through the now child-free cave system as proof.

Musk responded on Sunday in a freakish series of tweets referring to Unsworth, without using his name, as "pedo guy".

In a second tweet, Musk said he bet the claim was true.

Condemnation of his remarks seemed universal - a mixture of outrage at the slur against Unsworth, outrage against the implied slur against Thailand, and yet more mockery of Musk. "I don't know the guy, never met the guy, and don't want to meet the guy", he said.

Claus Rasmussen, a Danish national and diving instructor in Thailand, called the allegations "inappropriate" and praised Unsworth's role in the rescue. "Well." He cleared his throat. "Well, [if] by definition rescuing 12 young boys.that puts everybody in the same context".

He added the comments about him were an assault on the whole rescue team. "I think people realize what sort of guy [Musk] is".

Unsworth says he felt "astonished and very angry" at the attack and told The Guardian that he would consider legal action.

"Yes", Unsworth said instantly.

Spokesmen for Tesla and Musk's office did not respond to requests for comment.

At a time when criticisms of Musk's electric auto company Tesla have ramped up, the 47-year-old tech magnate has publicly sparred with people on numerous fronts - a remarkable form of conduct for a chief executive, even one as outspoken as Musk.
